Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction

MBSR is a program which teaches the simple yet powerful practices of mindfulness that have been shown to positively and profoundly affect participants' ability to reduce medical symptoms and psychological distress and to increase one's ability to cope with short and long term stressful conditions. Thirty years of scientific research indicate that MBSR also increases the ability to relax, cope with chronic pain and illness, reduce pain levels, and increase energy and enthusiasm for life.
Within a safe and supportive learning environment, participants are taught a variety of simple and gentle mindfulness practices that are easily integrated into daily life and can be used anytime and anywhere. This systematic method of instruction includes mindfulness meditation, gentle stretching and yoga, formal and informal practices, group dialogue and discussion, the cultivation of a personal mindfulness practice and daily home practices to enhance awareness in everyday life.
The eight-session MBSR program is available to individuals new to mindfulness practices as well as experienced practitioners who are looking to expand, deepen and strengthen their mindfulness practice. Private instruction sessions are also available. Programs and workshops are also presented at other locations and are customized to meet the needs of the individual, group or organization.
Stephanie Speer, MA has been teaching MBSR to individuals and groups for over 20 years and was trained by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD and Saki Santorelli, EdD, MA of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.
Stephanie Speer, MA is an experienced instructor of MBSR having taught mindfulness practices to individuals and groups for over 20 years. She received her MBSR professional training from Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD and Saki Santorelli, EdD, MA of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and her Masters in Humanistic Education from Goddard College.
Since 1996, she has created and presented a variety of MBSR programs for the general public, mental/physical health care professionals, educators and students, patients and caregivers, senior citizens, and employees and employers. In the aftermath of the terrorist acts of 2001, she taught mindfulness practices to survivors, first responders and the general public for Project Liberty sponsored by FEMA/NYS Office of Mental Health.
In addition to providing individual and group instruction, eight-week MBSR courses, one-day retreats and customized workshops, Stephanie also provides programs on Mindful Aging, Embracing Gratitude, The Art of Savoring, Mindfulness in the Workplace and Everyday Mindfulness. Beginners and experienced practitioners, interested in expanding, deepening and strengthening their mindfulness practices, are welcome to participate.
Her professional work and personal life have been informed by 30 years of meditation practice and Buddhist studies. As a resident in Ulster County, she finds the beauty, serenity and simplicity of this area to support and enhance her personal meditation practice enabling her to enter the busyness of the world with greater ease.
